There’s often times when you select the perfect carpet that fits your home’s interior decor to a T. This makes it very difficult to part ways with that carpet. It’s been there through the thick and the thin and holds so many memories from throughout the years.
Unfortunately, carpeting can’t stand the testament of time forever. No matter how many times you clean your carpet, it will eventually give up the good fight with time, which means it’s time to give it the heave-ho and purchase some new flooring.
But how do you know when the time is right to replace your carpet? Let’s take a look at our list of signs that your carpet is ready to be replaced.
- Wear & Tear: Carpeting is designed to take on rough conditions, but eventually it wears out due to the wear and tear from heavy traffic. Of course, some minor tears and rips can be repaired by professionals, but there are times that rips and tears are just too significant to repair. Throw rugs can hide certain tears and rips, but if you’ve got damage that can’t be covered or fixed by a professional, it’s probably a good sign it’s time to replace your carpeting.
- Stains: This kind of ties into the Wear & Tear section, but if you’ve got enough stains where your carpet is starting to resemble a tie-dyed shirt, then perhaps it’s time to part ways and consider some new flooring. Of course, consult a professional before you decide to get rid of your carpets due to stains. Perhaps those stains can be removed. But there’s often times where stains just won’t go away, and that means it’s time to move on.
- Smelly Odor: This is an important one, because a smelly odor due to your carpet that won’t go away after a good washing may indicate some further problems. Either the odor has made it’s way deep into the carpet fibers, or even worse, it creeped into the carpet pad or subfloor. Either way, if you want that stinky odor to leave your home, it’s probably going to require at least removing the carpet.
- Bad Padding: Your carpet comes in two pieces — the actual carpeting itself and the padding underneath. The padding is what supports the carpet and gives it a nice cushy feeling. But, as we mentioned before, the padding can absorb spills and odors, which means it will most likely need to be replaced. Also, old age can set in on your padding, and a good indicator of padding past its days is unevenness or wrinkling in your carpet.
It’s never easy parting ways with your carpeting. It’s a key part of your home and if it’s time to part ways, it most likely means that it has been a part of your home for many years. Most of the time, if you’ve used proper maintenance and cleaning on your carpet, it simply comes down to old age, which means it’s time to put the old boy down.
