People tend to shy away from or avoid using dark colors all together because of the myth that it makes a room appear smaller. However, if contrasted with the right colors, a dark floor can actually visually expand a space as well as give it a very sophisticated and polished look.
Not only will dark floors create a very classic look, they are also easier on messes. Scratches and stains also won’t appear as vividly on a darker floor versus a lighter one.
Once you’ve decided to go with a dark floor, you can choose the any material you want. Darker colors are available in every style from wood to tile to laminate. Once the floor is installed, you can start contrasting the rest of the room with it.
Neutral colors such as white, beige, grey and lighter shades of color should be used for the furniture, paint, and ceilings. The lighter color will draw in and reflect the natural light which is what will make the room appear brighter.
If the dark floor is still drawing too much attention, you can always break it up by adding in an area rug.
You don’t have to be scared of dark colors, just make sure they’re offset by an equally light color to help balance out the room.
