Indoor or Outdoor
Before you make any decision on what your welcome mat will look like, you have to determine if this is mat is greeting guests outside or inside. If it’s an indoor mat, you don’t have to worry so much about the material. However, if it’s an outdoor mat, you better be sure to pick a material that is able to withstand hard outdoor conditions.
Collect That Dirt
You can’t be afraid of your welcome becoming dirty, because let’s face it, besides providing a warm welcome to guests, it’s meant to keep dirt and outdoor debris from making its way into your home. Look for a welcome mat with an abrasive or textured surface in order to catch and pull away any dirt and debris from shoes.
Not One Size Fits All
Not all doorways or entryways are alike, therefore not all welcome mats should be alike. You want to make sure your welcome mat is covering a good portion of your doorway. If your welcome mat only covers a small portion of your doorway or entryway, it will seem small and out of place.
