Laminate and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) offer many similar benefits. Both are a great alternative option to the desired natural surfaces such as ceramic tile, stone, and wood because they can imitate the grain patterns and textures found in the natural materials giving the same desired look. They both are also easy to clean and are created with a layered technique making them more durable. However there are some distinct differences between the two.
Layering material
PVC vinyl is the main component of the LVT layers. It makes the material more flexible and adaptable to any room versus the high density fiberboard that creates the core of laminate floors making them stronger and more rigid.
Installation
LVT flooring is usually installed using some kind of adhesive glue which makes them more permanent and harder to remove. Laminate floors use the floating floor method meaning each plank interlocks with each other rather than being permanently glued down. This will make them a little easier to remove when a new floor needs to be installed. However, a good amount of LVT flooring also comes in a floating flooring style.
Durability
With it’s several layers, LVT does offer a decent amount of durability, however it’s strength lies in its flexibility which is derived from its softer make up. Laminate is made from wood byproducts and is built to be more durable. LVT can be equally as durable as laminate as long as it has a good wear layer.
Both types of material make for great flooring. They provide the same aesthetic appeal as natural surfaces. They both, however, have their own strengths and weaknesses which should be applied to your decision based on your home and room needs/uses.
