No matter how much you try, the winter elements, whether it’s a big snow storm or a day of melting, are going to make their way into your home. And by the looks of things, the rest of this winter is going to have plenty of days of melting snow. So here are some tips to keep your floors safe from snow, mud and salt.
Mats and Runners
We can’t express enough the importance of keeping welcome mats and runners at ALL entrances to your home. If you’ve got children or pets, we recommend runners, only because children and pets have a tendency to enter the home at blazing speeds. Runners will help catch some of the winter debris before it makes it to your beautiful floors.
Have Replacement Mats
Snow, mud and ice will collect quickly on your welcome mats, and eventually, those mats will need to be washed or even replaced. So be sure to have some backup troops ready to head in. Having new replacement mats waiting in the wings will have you ready when your current mats can handle no more.
Clean After Big Storms or Melting Days
When big snow storms hit, or the opposite, melting days occur, these are going to be the most dangerous days for your floors. So after you’ve cleared the snow, salted the ice or the melting has ended, be sure to clean your mats, clean your entrances and vacuum, sweep or mop your floors. You may feel like you’ve won the battle and prevented any winter elements from hitting your floors, but there might be debris that you don’t even notice.
Overall
There’s many tips and techniques for cleaning your floors when the winter elements hit, but it’s best to start by preventing as much debris as possible from entering your home. Think about the entrances to your home, and start there. If you can winterize these areas, you’re off to a good start.
