Removing Pesky Stains From Your Carpet

Posted on October 30, 2014 (November 5, 2014) by Jabro Carpet One Floor & Home

There’s nothing more frustrating than walking into your home and being greeted by a new stain on your carpet. What’s even worse is when that stain won’t come out and is there to welcome you every time you walk into that room.

Well, we’re here to help you get rid of that pesky stain.

We realize that there are many weapons – juice, pet stains, etc. – in this world to stain your carpet, so we’re going to limit it to stains that occur most often. So take a look at the following steps on how to properly handle these common carpet stains.

Juice

Certain types of juices, like Kool-Aid for instance, can create hard-to-miss stains and can actually get worse if not properly treated. Here’s the proper steps to take:

  1.  Gently blot the stain with a dry towel. Rubbing a stain can make the stain worse and could lead to saturation of the carpet pad.
  2. A mixture of white vinegar, dish soap and water in a spray bottle is a great application. Spray the stained area, soak for 5-10 minutes and then proceed with blotting the stain with a clean, dry towel until stain is removed.
  3. If this doesn’t work, there is a variety of carpet stain products that can help remove those peskier stains.

Pet Stains

If you have a pet, it’s unavoidable. Whether it’s a missed potty opportunity or a stain from a mess, you will have your work cut out for you. But these stains can be removed with these simple steps:

  1.  Remove any debris. If it is wet, again, use the blotting method rather than smearing or rubbing. Blot until nearly dry.
  2. If the stain is already dry, try to moisten the spot and follow by applying a carpet cleaning product formulated for pet stains. Then follow step 1.
  3. Neutralizing the odor is key, and can be difficult. Try mixing 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with 4 cups of warm water. Allow mixture to soak for several minutes and proceed blotting until dry.
  4. Also try mixing 1/4 teaspoon of mild liquid dish soap with one cup warm water. Again, soak for several minutes, blot, rinse with warm water and repeat.

Blood Stains

Blood stains have a nasty reputation of being the toughest stain to remove, but, rest assured, it can be removed if done properly.

  1.  Always use cold water instead of warm, because cold water will prevent blood from spreading to other carpet fibers.
  2. Spray the stain with a mixture of 1/4 teaspoon of grease-fighting, liquid dish soap and one cup cold water. Apply a generous amount. You can also try a mixture of 2 tablespoons of clear, white non-suds ammonia and 4 cups of water.
  3. Use paper towel or a dry, white cloth to blot the stain. Rinse with cold water and repeat.
  4. Keep in mind, blood stains are difficult to remove and may take persistence and several tries. The sooner you get to it, the better.
