Area rugs are used for many different purposes. Area rugs define spaces within a large room and they also link different spaces in the home. Rugs bring color, warmth and comfort as well as beauty and design.
The only problem is that there are so many colors, designs and sizes. How do you pick the perfect area rug for your home?
First you have to set a budget. You should try to buy the best rug that fits your budget. When you know what price range you can manage, the search process is narrowed down and you can begin to look for other characteristics you want in your rug.
Size:
You do not want to buy a rug that is too big or too small for the space. Rugs that are too small for a space make the space look chopped up. For a dining area you should measure the size of your seating area, and then shop for the closest size up from that.
Material:
Choosing the right material for you means thinking about where you are placing this rug. If this is a high traffic area you may need more durable material such as wool or nylon. If you are looking for a rug to accent a less used space silk may be the direction you want to take. Research the different rug materials available and keep in mind that different material can increase the price of a rug drastically.
Design:
Now for the fun part! Take a look at the decor that will be surrounding your rug. Try and find colors that compliment the interior design of your space. You should also think about how much “attention” you want your rug to receive. If you’re looking for a rug to be the focal point of your space, look for bold and eye catching designs. If you are looking for a rug to accent the space, look for clean, simple designs.
Most importantly be sure you LOVE the rug before you purchase it. Rugs last for years. Don’t buy a rug you will get sick of in a few years and have to replace!
