You’ve probably heard the term floating floor before, but do you know what it means? It certainly doesn’t mean we have a floor floating on water, that’s for sure. If that ever becomes a trend, we will be sure to let you know, but we have our doubts.
A floating floor means it is not secured to the underlying floor. Instead, the floor boards are attached to each other either by snapping or locking them together. So what’s the advantages of a floating floor compared to the traditional style of nailing or glueing down your floor? Let’s take a look.
Cost and Time
Perhaps one of the most obvious advantages is that it’s not only cheaper, but it’s typically easier to install. Boards can be connected together like a jigsaw puzzle, holding together in place to form one cohesive floor. You can either choose from a click-lock version or a tongue and groove style, making it simple for installation.
Eco-friendly
Most floating floors are eco-friendly, simply because it uses less wood and some are made of entirely eco-friendly materials. It can also be easily placed over existing flooring or a variety of different materials and is highly flexible.
Comfort
When walking on floating floors, you may notice some flexibility and give in the floor. This is a result of the air cushion between the floating floor and the substrate. This can make it more comfortable, and can also be easier on the knees and the back.
Removal and Reuse
Keep in mind that a floating floor is not attached to the underlying material. Because of this, it’s easy to pull off and make necessary repairs. Perhaps you move or want to use the floor in a different room. Depending on the brand, you can unlock the floor boards and relocate. It’s that simple!
As you can see, the floating floor has many convenient advantages, which is why you are probably seeing more and more floating floors throughout homes. Obviously, one of the major advantages is the ease of installation. However, we do recommend you ask a professional before installing a floating floor. We are more than happy to help and can assist you on selecting your next floor.
