While everyone loves the sunshine, UV rays can be a little intense. And just because old man winter is right around the corner, doesn’t mean it can’t happen during the colder months.
Just like skin, too much UV exposure can damage hardwood floors as well. Extended exposure to UV rays causes hardwood floors to lose their color and fade over time. There are, fortunately, a few things you can do to slow down this process and keep your floors looking great.
Stains & Finishes: Using stains that have pigment (as opposed to dyes) and finishes with UV inhibitors can help slow down the process of fading of your hardwood floors.
Drapes, shutters & blinds: While you’ll want to let the sunshine in, using drapes, shutters or blinds to limit the amount can help protect your floors. Light curtains are a great option because they’ll let some natural light in without directly exposing your floor to harmful UV rays.
Window films: Essentially this is a sticky material you can place on the inside of your windows. These films are a great way to protect your floors from the sun.
Low E Glass: This is the most extreme and costly option, but it is very effective. Low E Glass basically has window films built into it. It blocks not only UV light (which bleaches the floors) but also Infrared (which damages floors due to the heat). This option is best if you are in the market for some new windows.
Over time your floors will become damaged from the sun, but there are ways you can protect your floors and ensure longevity of your cherished hardwood floors.
