The smell of fresh cut grass and barbeque has made its way back to Michigan, which means summer is almost here!
As we bask in the sun, let’s not forget about our floors, especially hardwood, which tends to shy away from the hot, humid weather. Take a look at our top tips on how to protect your floors this summer.
Minimize the Sun
After getting through winter, allowing some natural, warm sunlight into your home is inevitable. But too much can damage your floors. Certain types of flooring are fairly sensitive to extended periods of time in the sun. Try and limit direct sunlight on the same sections of your flooring in order to prevent fading of your floors.
Try closing curtains during certain times. If you simply can’t resist allowing the sunlight in your home, try creating some shade on sections of your floor that are in direct sunlight. Plants, lamps, end tables or any dečor items are perfect.
Avoid Changes in Humidity
Humidity can quickly become a problem for your floors. While you most likely won’t see any effects right away, prolonged standing moisture will eventually take its toll, leading to warping of hardwood or even mildew growth on carpet.
Be sure to maintain a consistent level of moisture within the home. If you’re getting too much moisture during the summer, maybe it’s time to invest in a dehumidifier.
Heavy Traffic Areas
Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean the rain won’t fall. Be sure to prevent any of the outdoor conditions making their way to your floors by prepping your entrances to the home.
Welcome mats and doors mats are a great way of limiting dirt and mud to your floors. You can also keep plastic tubs at your entrances after a big rainstorm if the kids are coming in with muddy shoes.
There’s no reason your floors and summer can’t coexist. By following these simple steps, you’re sure to limit any damage to your floors while still enjoying the summer months.
