Hardwood flooring is perfect for adding a level of sophistication and beauty. Often, customers have hardwood in one room, but not in the other, and wish to have hardwood in both rooms. When the two rooms transition into each other, it can be challenging to match the existing hardwood with the new hardwood.
Here are some tips to make sure your transition goes smoothly.
Thickness of flooring and sub-floor
The last thing you want to do is create a speed bump from one room to the next. It’s important to measure the thickness of not only your pre-existing hardwood flooring, but also the sub-flooring. The height of the sub-flooring in each room and the new flooring should be exact to ensure your flooring transitions smoothly.
Width
It’s vital to measure the width of your floor boards. Often, customers try to “eye it up” only to find out that their new wood flooring is off a quarter of an inch or more. We are not saying you can’t go with wider or less than wider boards. But if you want exact widths, be sure to measure.
Color
Color can be tricky. If you’ve got a custom stained floor, matching the exact color can be challenging. Stains also will fade after years, which makes it challenging to find the exact stain. If you’re OK with the color not being exact, it’s best to try some samples on a piece of the hardwood flooring, let it dry and compare it to the old flooring.
If you want it exactly the same and can’t find the right color, you can always refinish the wood and re-stain each room with the same color.
